  14.           PRESIDENT NAMES BLANCHARD AMBASSADOR TO CANADA
  15.  
  16. (Washington, DC)    President Clinton announced his intention 
  17. today to nominate former Michigan Governor Jim Blanchard to be 
  18. the U.S. Ambassador to Canada.
  19.  
  20.      "Our relationship with Canada is absolutely vital," said the 
  21. President.  "They are our largest trading partner and one of our 
  22. closest neighbors.  That's why I am nominating an Ambassador in 
  23. whom I place such a high degree of trust -- my good friend Jim 
  24. Blanchard.  With a voice that will be clearly heard in both 
  25. Ottawa and Washington, he will ensure that this important 
  26. relationship continues to be productive for both countries."

  28.      Blanchard, currently a partner in the law firm of Verner, 
  29. Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand, was Governor of Michigan 
  30. from 1983-90.  In addition to leading his state's economic 
  31. recovery and implementing a variety of innovative education and 
  32. training programs, he worked closely with the Prime Minister of 
  33. Canada and Premier of Ontario to improve trade relationships and 
  34. address common environmental problems.  He was awarded the 
  35. International Freedom Festival's Freedom Award in recognition of 
  36. his leadership in U.S.-Canada affairs.

  38.      Before his election to the governorship, Blanchard served 
  39. four terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.  As 
  40. Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Economic Stabilization, he 
  41. authored and steered to passage the Chrysler Loan Guarantee Act, 
  42. which rescued that company from bankruptcy.   He had previously 
  43. been an Assistant Attorney General in Michigan, and a lawyer in 
  44. private practice.  He holds a B.A. and M.B.A. from Michigan State 
  45. University and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota.

  47.      Blanchard, 50, is married to Janet Blanchard, the White 
  48. House's Assistant Director of Presidential Personnel.  His son, 
  49. Jay, is a recent graduate of Michigan State University.
